What is chlorine dioxide?
Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a chemical compound that has been used for many years in industrial and municipal water treatment. It is recognized for its disinfectant and oxidizing properties, enabling the elimination of many contaminants present in water.
It should not be confused with chlorine: chlorine dioxide is a distinct compound, with a different mode of action and documented efficacy at low concentrations.
The Dioxypure kit consists of two 100 mL dropper bottles:
- Bottle A: 25% sodium chlorite (NaClO₂)
- Bottle B: 4% hydrochloric acid (HCl)
The reaction between these two reagents generates chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), ready for use.
How to: Purify a liter of water when traveling
Step 1 – Prepare the active mixture
In a small, clean, dry container, mix 3 drops from bottle A with 3 drops from bottle B. Let react for 30 seconds to 1 minute until a slight yellow color appears.
Step 2 — Treat the water
Pour into the water to be treated.
Allow to act for at least 30 minutes before consumption.
