What is hypertonic seawater?

Hypertonic seawater refers to seawater kept at its natural concentration, 34‰ (34 grams of salt per liter), without dilution. This concentration is higher than that of human blood plasma, which distinguishes it from isotonic seawater (9‰), diluted to approximate the body's salinity.

It is precisely this high concentration of minerals and trace elements that makes it an ally during periods when the body is most challenged: intense physical exertion, marked fatigue, or the need for targeted remineralization.

Why sports deplete the body's mineral reserves

During sustained physical exertion, perspiration leads to a significant loss of electrolytes. This loss largely explains:

  • muscle cramps at the end of exercise or during the following night;
  • the feeling of fatigue that persists despite rest;
  • a longer recovery time between two sessions.

Replenishing these reserves quickly after exercise is therefore a key step, often overlooked in favor of rehydration with plain water alone, which is not sufficient to compensate for mineral losses.

In 1897, René Quinton demonstrated the similarity between the mineral composition of seawater and that of mammalian blood plasma. His work, known as the law of marine constancy, laid the foundations for the use of microfiltered seawater for remineralization purposes, a practice still widely followed today through various brands of marine plasma.
